A dissolve is the result of a shot fading out while another is fading in, this creates a link between the two. It is often used in to convey the passage of time. Apart being used as a transitional device, it can also be used as a means of expression. Although it is referred mainly as a visual technique, it can also be used in the soundtrack.

  • The use of dissolve can have the same disorientating effect than the visual superimposition, sound would need to be established anywhere within the sequence for the audience to orientate in the filmic space.
  • Techniques used as part of the continuity editing convention
