Establishing sound

Sound that establishes, from the very beginning of a scene, the general character of the surrounding

Characteristics:

  • Can provide a considerable amount of information: time, place, characters, etc…
  • It is actively linked with the soundscape
  • Can be backed up with visuals or not
  • Usually reduced in volume when theatrical speech is in use
