Tiring of the auditory nerves that result in a loss of awareness of a particular sound; Result of two different processes: adaptation and fatigue: Adaptation: perceptible volume seems to decrease over time to become low. Fatigue: tiring of the auditory nerves on certain frequency that will need to be louder to be perceived consequently
Characteristics:
- It is more noticeable with sounds that have a constant pattern (ex: Drone)
- Any changes in that pattern might result in its renewed awareness
