Listening modes

Conscious act of focusing on sound, there are three types, semantic, causal and reduced.

 

Semantic: voice

Characteristics:

  • Advances narrative, main sound focus
  • Can generate abstract experience when decentred

Related induced effect: Vocal effects

 

Causal: sound emitter

Characteristics:

  • Strengthens spatial localisation for the audience
  • With rendered sound, the recording and displaying method can harden the spatial recognition of the audience

Related effects: Centaur sound effects; Linguistic sound effects; musical sound effects

 

Reduced: sound quality

Characteristics:

  • Sole focus on sound for its quality
  • Does not carry anything else in the spectators’ mind’s ear
