Repulsion

Sound that produces an attitude of rejection in its listener

Characteristics:

  • Can help to underline subjectivity
  • Being a negative sensation by definition, the listener will avoid focusing on the sonic event and might loose any spatial cues
  • Tend to occur with loud high frequencies sounds (chalk on blackboard, bus’ brakes, etc…)
  • Usually easy to recognise
