Split screen, divided screen, multi image

Frame divided into two or more parts so that different space or action can be presented simultaneously

Characteristics:

  • Potentially provide more spatial information, especially when the temporal continuity is respected
  • If there is some spatial overlap between the screens, the offscreen space becomes reduced
  • Sound can guide the audience towards a particular screen

Opposite effect: Mattes
Similar effect: Visual superimposition
